An SEO Audit Checklist for Small Marketing Teams

By Obscura · 6 min read

An SEO audit can spiral into a 200-point spreadsheet that helps no one. Lean teams need the opposite: find the few things holding the site back, rank them by impact, and fix those first. Here's the checklist, in the order that matters.

1. Site health and indexing

Start with whether Google can crawl and index the pages you care about. Check indexed-page count against the pages that should rank, confirm the sitemap and robots.txt are correct, and look for noindex tags or canonicals pointing the wrong way. If your money pages aren't indexed, nothing else matters.

2. Triage errors by severity

Not every error deserves your afternoon. Sort issues into three buckets: things that block ranking (broken canonicals, blocked resources, 5xx errors, mass duplicate content), things that dilute it (slow Core Web Vitals, thin pages, broken internal links), and things that are cosmetic. Fix top-down and stop when the return drops off.

3. Keyword and competitive gaps

Map the queries that actually convert for your business, then see where you rank versus the two or three competitors who keep beating you. The gap list — high-intent terms where you're on page two or three — is your content roadmap. Prioritize terms with real buying intent over high-volume vanity keywords.

4. On-page and structure

For your priority pages, confirm the basics do their job: a title that leads with the target term, a clear H1, descriptive headings, internal links from relevant pages, and structured data where it applies. These are quick wins that compound.

5. Set position targets, not vibes

Close the audit with a target for each priority term — a realistic position to reach in the next quarter — so progress is measurable and the plan has a scoreboard. "Move these ten terms from page two to page one" is a plan; "improve SEO" is not.

Work it in that order and even a one-person team can run a credible audit in an afternoon and walk out with a prioritized, defensible plan.
